GenAI just fired the old definition of Smart

If GenAI can code faster than us, summarise better than us, and draft cleaner than us, what does “smart” even mean anymore?

For years, smart looked like execution: solving defined problems quickly.
GenAI is making a lot of that easier to access, easier to replicate, and easier to scale.

So the advantage shifts.

Smartness is moving upstream, into the human territory where context and consequence live.

Future smartness is:

  • Framing the right problem before solving anything
  • Sense-making when information is incomplete
  • Judgment under uncertainty and trade-offs
  • Reading what is unspoken in people and systems
  • Acting early because you spotted the signal before the noise

One line I keep coming back to:
Learning to co-think, communicate with machines, coexist with them, and make sense of complexity is redefining what intelligence and smartness mean.

Here’s the catch.
GenAI skills without guard rails create confident mistakes at scale.

The winners will be people who build GenAI capability with responsibility: clear thinking, verification habits, ethical boundaries, and an evidence trail.

If you want to build those “GenAI skills with guard rails” for yourself or your team, reach out to me. I run practical, role-based coaching that helps knowledge workers move upstream, fast.
