THE WORLD HAS BEEN RESET

AND we are indeed facing a ‘wicked’ problem. We can also see it as (VUCA)n.

A problem becomes ‘wicked’ problem when it is often challenging to solve due to its VUCA (Volatile, Uncertain, Complex, Ambiguous) nature. Many leading authorities on Psychology have used this term ‘wicked’ to describe a huge challenge that absolutely carries the nature of VUCA.

In this post, I would like to share the characteristics of this ‘wicked’ problem in order to show clarity in understanding for business leaders, about the holistic challenge that we are facing.

In my next post, I will share some insights on a suggestive guidance for a way forward.

  1. There is no definitive formula to address the present challenge, yet.
  2. There is no stopping rule. There is no way to know if your solution if final
  3. Generally, solutions to such problems are not true or false. It is only either good or bad
  4. It is multi-dimensional – often conflicting with each other. Individual priorities conflicts with societal priorities. And there are dimensions internal and external to them. They too can be in conflict. It makes us think if the fear is caused by the ‘virus’ itself or non-stop stream of media and social media stimulus.
  5. It is still not clear if the cause is arising from a ‘food market’ at a specific place or is it an indicator that globalization at an ‘above-the-limit’ speed has accelerated the situation from an epidemic to pandemic.
  6. There are many stakeholders acting individually and collectively – Governments, heads of nations, politicians, economies, academic institutions, research centers, health care organizations and individuals. Everyone and everything are interrelated.
  7. The problem is constantly and systematically evolving. It being multi-dimensional caused by multiple aspects involving multiple stakeholders makes it continuously complex. Even if there is a solution, it will be a lasting one.
  8. It does not have a set of solutions for reuse.
  9. The speed of adaptation required at this critical juncture is one system of globalization and the exponential growth nature of the challenge. If we have the flatten the exponential rise, a very different level of thinking by business leaders becomes the need of the hour.
  10. The impact to each business will be unique and hence the solution too.

The entire situation calls for a 100% data driven, design thinking approach in order to drive Agility, Flexibility and Adaptability.

I will share a suggestive ‘way forward’ in my next post.

Stay safe, stay healthy. A strong resilient mind is of utmost necessity to tide over the present challenge.
